American Studies Association In Ukraine

Development of partnerships with the U.S.A. is of great historic significance for Ukraine on the way to its integration into the world community. A number of factors, both political and socio-economic, have raised the interest of business circles and other American institutions toward Ukraine in recent years. The improvement of Ukrainian and American relations in the field of history, economy, culture, education, information technology etc. should favor the creation of a truly democratic society in Ukraine.
The analysis of the current situation testifies that Ukraine and the U.S.A.:
~~ are involved in search of business partners;
~~seek for introducing various business or education oriented projects;
~~face the tendency of the rapidly increasing number of people who are willing to study or do research in both countries.
On the other hand, there is a great demand for up-to-date systematic knowledge about Ukraine and the U.S.A. among different strata of the population in both countries, who have very little awareness of the target culture.
The American Studies Association in Ukraine (ASAU), which formally legalized its activities this year, is aimed at solving some of the above mentioned problems.
According to its Charter, the ASAU is an international public non-profit organization, which unites on a voluntary basis legal entities, citizens of Ukraine, citizens of foreign states, persons without citizenship and with double citizenship, who reached the age of 18. The ASAU shall carry out its activities in accordance with the Constitution of Ukraine, the Law of Ukraine On the Unions of Citizens, active legislation of Ukraine and the ASAU Charter. The membership in the ASAU can be individual and joint with equal rights.
The members of the Association are:
~~to follow the regulations of the ASAU Charter and fulfill the decisions of the Executive Board and the highest Authority – the ASAU Conference;
~~to accomplish specific job to achieve the objectives and mission of the ASAU;
~~not to do anything that can cause moral and financial damage to the ASAU;
~~to inform about secession from the Association;
~~to pay membership dues.
The members of the ASAU have the rights:
~~to have membership in other public organizations, which objectives and activities do not contradict the Charter of the Association;
~~to participate in the activities of the highest authority of the ASAU;
~~to elect and to be elected to the ASAU Executive Board;
~~to discuss and implement the ASAU programs;
~~to obtain full and complete information on the ASAU activities;
~~to cease to be a member of the ASAU on the voluntary basis after a written notification of the ASAU.
The Association has its independent balance, bank accounts, stamp and forms with its name in Ukrainian and English languages. The activities of the ASAU is spread in Ukraine, the United States of America and other foreign states.
The ASAU will function in two main directions: research and training; and it will be able to offer different forms of cooperation in various fields like humanities, education, culture, politics, etc.
The adopted Charter identifies the main objectives of the ASAU as follows:
~~to study, disseminate and popularize American cultural heritage and traditions; to provide with scientific consultations, to conduct conferences, seminars etc. on American Studies and to participate in the similar events abroad;
~~to foster research in different fields of American Studies and to publish the results in Ukrainian and English;
~~to foster creation of possibilities for development of connections between the educational and scientific institutions of Ukraine, the United States and other countries;
~~to create the data base for international and national foundations which implement their activities in the fields of science and education, and to set up partnership with them;
~~to participate in the development of international and national educational and scientific projects on American Studies and to foster their implementation;
~~to foster creation of teaching materials on American Studies to satisfy the demands of Ukrainian and foreign users.
